| | The project included a renovation of the existing house, an addition, and landscaping. The client’s goals are to create a retreat-like residence where they can rejuvenate from their healthcare careers and guests feel relaxed, add a two-car garage, master bedroom suite, in addition to renovating the existing house. The goal was to choose materials that have minimal impact on the environment, and in particular, discourage carpenter bees from nesting (a large problem in this area along the river).
The architect’s solution keeps the focus of the residence on the river. The new master suite, which is raised one-half story to create privacy from the exterior public ground plane, increases views up and down the river, and enhances stargazing from the interior at night. The orientation of views and solar paths, along with the restrictions of the site set backs create a complimentary geometric relationship between the existing and new structures. Renovations to the original house include an inviting, light-filled entry and opens the existing kitchen to be a more spacious gathering place and integrates with the living space. The architect collaborated with a glass artist for the handrail referencing the owner's love of music. |
