| | Originally constructed in 1951 along the eastern US coastline, this house suffered from years of insensitive additions, alterations and neglect.
The client’s goals for the project were to restore the existing structure to its original design intent, which was never realized, even in the 1951 iteration; incorporate up to date technology and sustainable design systems; and design an addition so the original structure appears as a sculpture with the addition as a backdrop.
The architectural solution meets the needs of the 21st century and the desires of the new owners by stripping away the myriad of additions and alterations and restoring the original design intent. A new bedroom wing connects to the original structure by a glass-enclosed bridge, keeping the sculptural, stand-alone character of the original design intact. The addition design incorporates materials to minimize its appearance and create a backdrop for the original house. Sustainable strategies were employed to heat, cool and enclose the original structure, raising its ability to perform to today’s energy standards even with an extraordinary amount of glass.
