| | This competition is a joint-venture between the Nature Conservancy of Hawai’i and Kapolei High School is located in Kapolei, Hawai’i. The goals of the Center are to reflect the project-based learning of Kapolei High School; perpetuate Hawai’ian culture and values of caring for land and sea through arts, science and technology; lead students and adults toward conservation pathways; and model sustainable architecture strategies for Hawai’i.
The design team’s response is to use the building configuration to relay the mythologies that make Hawai'ian culture in this location unique and as a tool to describe how the environment evolved to its current state; use historic typologies of island architecture to create a learning laboratory that builds on the past to bridge to the future; use orientation to maximize passive cooling ventilation and daylighting; and use recycled, locally generated and low carbon materials to minimize carbon footprint and material impact.
